Former Disney illustrator Brian Donnelly created his first vinyl toy in 1999: an 8-inch “companion” whose round belly, noodlelike limbs, and white gloves immediately reminded viewers of the cartoons his former workplace was famous for. The limited-edition toy, produced in collaboration with Japanese brand Bounty Hunter, reflects KAWS ‘desire to make his work more accessible to the public. In the years since, white KAWS sculpture has represented most of his iconic characters in three dimensions, including Sidekick, Bandy, and Blitz, as well as his renditions of iconic cartoons like Tweedy, Snoopy, and Pinocchio. When first released, the white KAWS sculptures usually sell out within seconds. When MoMA promoted KAWS ‘toys in its design store, demand from collectors was so high that the museum’s website crashed several times.

Brian Donnelly, known professionally as Kaws, is an American artist and designer. His work includes the repeated use of a series of figurative figures and motifs, some of which date back to the beginning of his career in the 1990s, first drawn in 2D and later realized in 3D. Some of his characters are his own creations, while others are redesigned versions of existing ICONS. Kaws’ sculptures range in size from a few inches to 10 meters and are made of a variety of materials, including fiberglass, aluminum, wood, bronze, and steel pontoon inflatable rafts.
