According to acts, Paul was a Pharisee. Prior to his conversion, he participated in the persecution of Jesus’ early disciples, probably Hellenistic expatriate Jews who had converted to Christianity in the Jerusalem area. In the narrative of Acts, Paul is on the road traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to “arrest them and bring them back to Jerusalem.” He lost his sight when the risen Christ appeared to him with great light, but three days later Ananias of Damascus restored his sight and Paul began to preach that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah of the Jews and the Son of God. About half of Acts deals with Paul’s life and work.

Today, Paul’s letters remain an important source of theology, worship, and pastoral life in the Latin and Protestant traditions in the West and the Catholic and Orthodox traditions in the East. Like many other apostles and missionaries involved in the spread of the Christian faith, Paul’s influence on Christian thought and practice has been described as “profound and universal”.
