The homeless sleeping Jesus statue depicts Jesus as a homeless man sleeping on a park bench. His face and hands were covered, hidden under a blanket, but the cross-wound on his foot revealed his identity. The statue has been described as a “visual translation” of the passage from The Gospel of Matthew, in which Jesus tells his disciples, “As you did to one of my youngest brothers, so you did to me”. The sculptor intended the bronze to be provocative, he concedes, “which is essentially what sculpture is about. It’s about challenging people.” He provided the first castings for St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, but both churches turned them down. A spokesman for St. Michael’s said the church declined because the praise was “not consistent” and was being repaired. The cast prepared for St. Michael’s college was installed at Regis College, A Jesuit seminary at the University of Toronto. Similarly, a spokesman for St. Patrick’s praised the work, but declined to buy the cast because of ongoing renovations.
