Standing nearly 10 feet (3 meters) high, it overlooks Lake Geneva and was unveiled on 25 November 1996 by Mercury’s father and Montserrat Caballe, with band members Brian May and Roger Taylor in attendance. Every year since 2003, fans from around the world have gathered in Switzerland as part of the Freddie Mercury Montreux Memorial Day, the first weekend in September, to pay tribute to the singer.
