As a young man, David played the harp for King Saul. Whenever god’s evil spirit came upon Saul, David picked up his harp and played it. Then Saul would be at ease, and the evil spirit would leave him. Later, David was called the “Sweet Psalm of Israel.” We have many examples in the Psalms. On the traditional mount Zion, near the traditional tomb of David, there is a King David statue playing a harp.

The King David statue has been damaged many times, and repairs have not always been quick. The attackers knocked pieces of King David’s face off several times, and the damage was still visible even after repairs. The monument was installed in October 2008 near the tomb of King David, under the walls of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Theotokos. Israeli authorities received the bronze statue as a gift from the Russian charity St. Nicholas Foundation. A 120-member Russian delegation came to open the monument.
