Figure sculptures often appear in squares or parks. The Edward Colston slave trader statue is a bronze statue of Bristow-born merchant Edward Colston. It was created in 1895 by The Irish sculptor John Cassidy, it stands on a Portland stone plinth in a park in Bristol, England, known as the Centre. In 1977, the statue was designated Grade II listed. The Edward Colston slave trader statue has been the subject of controversy since the 1990s, when Colston’s reputation as a philanthropist came under scrutiny for his involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. In 2018, a Bristol City Council project aimed to add a second plaque to better understand the statue’s background and summarize Colston’s role in the slave trade, resulting in agreed wording and a cast plaque ready for installation. Its installation was vetoed in March 2019 by Marvin Rees, the mayor of Bristol, who promised to rewrite the plaque, which never materialised.

The monument originally consisted of an 8 ‘8 “(2.64 m) bronze statue of Edward Colston (1636-1721) on a 10’ 6” (3.20 m) pedestal. The statue depicts Colston in a flowing wig, velvet coat, satin vest, and knee-length breeches typical of his time. The plinth is made of Portland stone and is decorated with bronze plaques featuring dolphins at every corner. Of the four plaques, there is one on each side of the plinth, and three are art Nouveau style reliefs: two depict scenes from Colston’s life, and the third shows maritime fantasies. The plaque on the south side reads “Erected by the citizens of Bristol as a monument to one of the best and wisest sons of their city in 1895 AD” and “John Cassidy Fecit”. If you are considering putting a figure sculpture in the square, this Edward Colston slave trader statue is well worth getting your hands on.
